More Than Just a Drink: Celebrating National Margarita Day in San Antonio
San Antonio knows how to do a "Sunday Funday" right, especially when it falls on National Margarita Day (February 22nd). In the Alamo City, the margarita isn't just a cocktail; it’s the signature drink of our culture and a symbol of our vibrant spirit.
A Mystery Shaken with History
While the margarita is the most popular cocktail in Texas today, its exact origin is a bit of a mystery. Some legends say it was created in the 1930s for a showgirl named Marjorie King who was allergic to everything but tequila. Others claim a Dallas socialite named Margarita Sames first mixed it for guests at a house party in 1948.
Regardless of who first salted the rim, San Antonio played a massive role in its evolution. One of the men who revolutionized the drink, Mariano Martinez (inventor of the frozen margarita machine), actually used a recipe his father learned while working at a San Antonio speakeasy back in 1938.
Why We Celebrate Local
National Margarita Day was founded around 2008 by Todd McCalla simply to promote a "sophisticated appreciation" for the drink and the friendships made while sharing one. For us in San Antonio, it’s a perfect opportunity to:
Connect with our Neighbors: Whether you’re a long-time resident or a local business owner, these celebrations are where community happens.
Support Local Gems: From historic spots that have been around since the 1930s to sleek new rooftop bars, every sip supports the families and staff that make SA unique.
Embrace our Heritage: With over 55% of our city identifying as Hispanic, the margarita is a delicious reflection of our local music, architecture, and spicy Tex-Mex cuisine.
